Maarten Bartholomeus has been working as an ERTMS expert within the Dutch Infrastructure Manager ProRail since 2007. With more than twenty-five years of experience in ERTMS, he has been involved in several railway projects as an engineer, consultant, project manager, and assessor. Maarten holds a master’s degree in physics.  In his role as an ERTMS expert, Maarten is responsible for the Dutch ERTMS engineering rules, ERTMS project specifications and ERTMS user processes. He actively cooperates with the ERTMS Users Group and the European Union Agency for Railways in establishing specifications and guidelines for ERTMS. Additionally, Maarten participates in multiple European workgroups focusing on operational harmonization, specification improvements and innovations. He also holds a train driver's license and is one of the founders of the Train Detection (formerly known as Hybrid Level 3) concept, as well as a co-author of the Hybrid Train Detection principles.

How can the braking curves be adapted to a more realistic behaviour of the rolling stock?

The aim of this workshop is to inform about generic changes of the ETCS Braking curves adaptation to better reflect on the real train behaviour; i.e., the ones already done and finalised for the Baseline 4 Release 1 (SV 3.0) in the CCS TSI 2023 as well as the ones that has already been identified and logged to the ERTMS CR data base with the aim to possibly further improve either the performance of the overall system (incl. one with the possibility to remove/minimise the need for the use of the release speed when approaching the end of movement authority) or the ergonomics of the related display towards the driver. High-level description of all these changes, including videos/simulations of possible solutions, will be provided.
